Curdie grew up in the rural part of Vermont and at a young age she moved with her family to the backwoods of Cape Breton Island, Canada. This was where life really took a different turn, as all work was done by hand and horses.
The days were long and filled with every kind of job imaginable; from learning to bake at age 10, make butter, cheese, or any other kitchen skill her Mom could find for her.
Of course outside chores were learned also, like driving the horses, stacking and splitting wood, milking the cows by hand, growing a garden, and of course learning what to do with all the food harvested in the gardens.
This hard life also brought spare time for learning things her father would teach in his woodworking shop during the winter. Back in the house, it was time to learn how to make post cards to use as stationery to send to friends.
This was a great skill to have while living so remotely. It passed away the hours on a cold winter day during one of the many snowstorms that hit the island every winter.
Out of this came greeting card making and eventually classes all over the Adirondacks where Curdie moved to.
Curdie now resides in Almond with her partner Bob, Lucy the cat, and Jack the husky.
Life is a little different as there’s no horses or cows to tend to, but there are chickens in the backyard, plus a huge vegetable garden.
Curdie also grows many flowers for bouquets, is a licensed home baker, and a manager of the Alfred Senior lunch program.
